history & heritage

Here is a selection of articles about the Moray Firth which give a flavour of some different elements of our rich heritage.

The Moray Firth has a fascinating history, with many links to neighbouring North Sea countries. Viking raids and settlements on our coast, international trade and commerce, alliances and marriages between noble houses, fishing and sailing, oil exploration, migrating fish and birds, explorers and exploiters - all play a part in this rich tapestry.

Consider the ingenuity of our ancestors in building cairns and fortified towers using massive stone blocks, without the aid of modern cranes and hoists; or the hardships faced by Highland Drovers herding cattle across mountains and in all weathers just to get to Market; or the cold struggle and dangers faced by fishermen, in open boats with just sails and oars and the stars for navigation.

The industrial development of the area through the ages has given us engineering wonders such as the Caledonian Canal (twinned with the Göta Canal in Sweden).
