care for the coast

Please help us to care for the coast and its wildlife - take only memories - leave only fooprints.

Blue Flag and Seaside Award Beaches
The Moray Firth has some of the most beautiful and unspoilt stretches of coast. Nairn Central beach has been awarded international Blue Flag Status and beaches at Brora, Dornoch, Golspie, Portmahomack and Shandwick gained Seaside Awards. Many other out of the way beaches are also cared for, mainly by local volunteers, but are not assessed.

Please help us keep our beaches clean and safe by not dropping litter.

Beach Guardians
The Moray Firth Partnership - Beach Guardians Campaign aims to help reduce coastal litter though information and advice to local residents, businesses and visitors to the area. www.morayfirth-partnership.org/work-1-coastal.html

The Scottish Outdoor Access Code gives information about your rights and responsibilities, as well as useful hints on minimising disturbance to the environment and wildlife when accessing the countryside. See www.outdooraccess-scotland.com

Wildlife Watching
"Watch how you Watch”
The Dolphin Space Programme (DSP) encourages people who go out to observe dolphins to "watch how they watch" and to respect the dolphins’ need for space. If you wish to watch dolphins from a boat, please use an operator registered under the Dolphin Space Programme. These operators follow a code of conduct to minimise disturbance to the dolphins and the environment. See: http://www.greentourism.org.uk/dsp

Dolphin Watching “hotspots”

It is possible to watch dolphins from the shore at many locations all around the Moray Firth. Some areas, especially where dolphins feed, are”hotspots” for sightings. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) has advice on how and where to watch birds, such as Ospreys, Eagles, and many other species, as well as details of bird reserves. It also has live web-cam footage at various nest sites www.rspb.co.ukScottish Natural Heritage has a great web site with information about wildlife and where to see it see www.snh.org.uk
